Looking for a quick and easy healthy snack that can be prepared in a flash? Oil on bread has long been the standard snack in Italian kitchens. (Especially before the advent of unhealthy junk food.) With only three ingredients, this simple snack is as economical as it is healthy. Or it makes a great addition to any meal!

Tip: For a special touch, squeeze half a fresh tomato over the bread. Set the tomato aside to use in the dinner.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices Italian-style bread, fresh or toasted
  • 4 teaspoons olive oil, extra virgin, freshly pressed if possible
  • Oregano to taste (optional)

Directions

  1. If desired, toast bread lightly.
  2. Drizzle with olive oil.
  3. Sprinkle crushed oregano over the slices.
  4. Serve immediately.

Laying in a year’s supply of fresh olive oil each fall is a must in Italy. And oh, how good it is! Fresh olive oil is so delicious with its fruity flavor to it. And that’s why fresh olive oil makes this snack such so special! When we get our fresh oil every year, Hubby races home to have this traditional snack! Gnam, gnam!

As olive oil ages, it begins to lose it’s distinctive flavor, which means it’s getting too old. If it tastes sour, it’s gone rancid. Yuck!

Buon Appetito and enjoy your olive oil snack!
