Don’t you Know You Are Beautiful? [Video]

Anyone who knows me also knows that I don’t like ads. Always trying to convince me to buy things I don’t need and have no room for! But I came across this promotional video by Dove® a while back and found it uplifting! Even though it sadly demonstrates the low self-esteem that many of us have, especially us women.

With the overemphasis society places on physical appearance, we tend to focus on it too much, and often feel like we never measure up. “My ears are too big, my nose is too small,” we say, “and my chin is strange. Me – beautiful?” (That’s how I often see myself!)

It’s all about perspective

This video shows people who have never met each other being split into two groups. They are paired up to chat for a while before reuniting in their original groups.

The first group is then called into a room one by one, where they are asked to sit behind a curtain. An artist sketches each person as they describe themselves. The artist never sees them.

Then the second group goes in one by one. Each one is asked to describe the person they had previously chatted to. Based on these new descriptions, the artist creates new sketches of the same women he drew before.

Ultimately, the two sets of portraits are so different that the subjects hardly seem to be the same people. In one set, the subjects appear unappealing and unattractive; in the other, they are quite beautiful.

This is because each of these groups had very different perspectives. The women who described themselves focused on their own perceived imperfections. As most of us tend to do.

However, beauty is more than skin deep.

The people in the second group were less critical because they didn’t just look at the face. They were trying to get to know the person. Therefore, they gave much more positive descriptions, mentioning beautiful features, gorgeous eyes, and radiant smiles.

God has given each of us distinctive characteristics that make us unique and special. No one else in the world has eyes as beautiful as yours or a smile as unique as yours! God created us exactly as he wanted and considers us beautiful!

True beauty is more than skin deep. It’s about who and what we are on the inside. It’s a kind and gentle spirit. It’s a grateful heart that pours out gratitude. It’s an encouraging smile. It’s a caring word and a warm hug. This kind of beauty outshines every facial flaw and wrinkle!

We are more than just a pretty face. And if a pretty face is all we have, then we’re not really beautiful at all. True beauty goes much deeper than the skin.

What about you? How would you describe yourself to the artist?

Take a quick look at the three-minute video below. I firmly believe that it’s time for us to change the way we think about ourselves. Because, remember, you truly are beautiful!

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

    1. It is indeed an amazing video, Lynn. And what an artist to draw such astonishingly accurate images of people sight unseen! But best of all is that we are beautiful in God’s eyes!
