Silence is Important

It seemed like I never got around to doing too many things. My excuse was “well, things happen.” And sometimes unexpected happenings do sidetrack me. But was that really the problem?

When I think about what’s most important in life, I always think about people not things. Things are of important, of course. We all need food, water, clothing, and a home. But there is much more to human life our than basic needs.

Being created in God’s image means that we also have a need to think and reflect, to relate, to be creative. But it seems that these things were the things that often fell by the wayside. The things I hope to do, the dreams I’ve tucked away in a drawer.

I always find myself wishing I had time to do them. Even though there are always 24 hours in every day. It wasn’t a lack of time.

So what was the problem? And then I realized that I’d stopped embracing silence. I was filling my time and my days with noise and distractions. Good noise, but distracting nonetheless. Good documentaries, informative news videos, engaging movies, and the like.

Decent stuff, but a lot of unnecessary static that was holding me back. And keeping me from pursuing my God-given inclinations to create, reflect, and learn. The things that make life special and give it greater meaning.

Activities that require an alert mind and an open heart. But all that static was keeping my heart from receiving the inspiration I needed.

In the silence of stillness, our hearts can hear God’s voice. And receive creative ability for all the things that make human life so amazing. Enabling us to live a life of creative and obedient service to God.

Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.

So true. I am taking a quiet retreat with a friend next week… much needed. I am looking forward to quiet spaces to just be still and listen. Happy New Year, Sheila.

Great Linda, I’m happy for you!! I can imagine that you need it. Quiet is probably not easy to find around your place. But at least your home is filled with a blessed and happy noise!! Enjoy your time, and happy new year to you too!

What a needed reminder to be still. I wrote down a short list (that didn’t stay short) of all the things I wanted to accomplish this year. When I was done writing I felt so overwhelmed and wanted to give up. Your post is a reminder to be quiet and let God direct to the most important and most soul satisfying things. Thank you.

I’m so glad it helped you, Karen. We do need reminders from time to time. Especially, I think, in overwhelming times like these. May God direct your path in every way!
