Italy is for Nature Lovers

Although Italy is a small country with a relatively small population, it boasts 70% of the world’s artistic and cultural heritage sites. In fact, Italy tops the UNESCO World Heritage List with 50 sites. China follows with 47 sites, and then Spain with 44. 

Italy is also one of the richest countries in Europe in terms of biodiversity. Yet, other than its spectacular beaches, Italy’s natural areas are often overlooked by tourists. Thanks to its unique biological and climatic conditions, Italy has:

• Nearly 7,000 different plant species, making it home to half of Europe’s flora
• 58,000 animal species, which is more than a third of Europe’s fauna
• Virtually every marine species that lives in the Mediterranean Sea
• Around 750,000 hectares of vineyards. This makes it one of the largest wine-producing nations in Europe. France and Italy have long competed for this distinction
• A coastline of 7400 km (4600 miles) and the highest number of beaches in Europe

Italy’s majestic Alps and natural areas

Yet many never experience the majestic beauty of the Alps and other natural areas in Italy. Which is odd considering that Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain, is partly in Italy.

The country also has hundreds of nature parks, reserves, and protected wetlands, including 24 national parks. From lakes and rivers to mountains and beaches, magnificent natural beauty is found everywhere.

These parks offer many opportunities. You can choose from a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, river rafting, stargazing, birdwatching, and cycling.

• On the Trail of Wildlife – Predazzo, Trentino
  This easy, guided walk is suitable for everyone. It includes a stop at the nearby wildlife area where you’ll learn about the wildlife that inhabits the park. The walk takes place every Wednesday from January to March 2025.
• Family Snowshoeing – Pescasseroli, Abruzzo
  On this excursion, you’ll learn to snowshoe and to recognize the tracks and trails of the wild animals that inhabit the park. At the end of this educational adventure, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner surrounded by snowmen you’ve built yourself, immersed in the magical snowy Alpine landscape. This winter excursion takes place every Sunday from January to March 2025.
• Owls, Little Owls, and Stars – Trentino
  During this night outing, you’ll discover and learn to know the park’s nocturnal birds while enjoying the silent tranquillity of the winter landscape under a blanket of stars! This event takes place every Saturday from January through March 2025.
• The Time of the Wolves – Pescacasseroli, Abruzzo
  On this climb, you will learn about these elusive predators and follow their paths, trying to spot them from a safe distance with binoculars and your guide’s professional equipment. This wildlife experience involves a climb up to the observation point. It is planned for January 9 2025.
